Brønngata i 1903
This particular photo started my interest for genealogy.
All of my grand parents was dead long before I was borne.
My uncle Harald pointed to some of the faces and told
me, was never sure who's who. And, the couple
to the left and the people in the windows were not known for
a very long time
I also was wondering when and why the family had gathered
to have their picture taken in front of their home.
At last I was able to find the year. The couple to left
is my father's uncle Marinus Sørensen with his newly wedded
wife Othilie Olsen. My great grand father is missing
but my great grand mother Cecile Marie Melgaard is present.
My great grand father Søren Sørensen Røsserrød died in 1902.
So the picture was taken in the summer of 1903.
But why would the family gone to the expense of taking
this photograph? In the spring of
1903 my grandfather's brother Edward Melgaard Sørensen with
his wife Anette Gurine Karlsen and six children had
emigrated to Chicago. This was the "do not forget us"
picture to those who left for the land of golden dreams.
Although contact with them had been lost, I found their
decedents in October 2003 and visited them in January 2004.
Lost once, but now reunited.
